CANINE GOOD CITIZEN starts September 7th

The Gold Standard of Dog Training

Canine Good Citizen is an American Kennel Club program that promotes good manners for dogs and responsible pet ownership. Dogs who pass the CGC test may earn an official certificate and title from the AKC.There's no age limit. Young dogs are welcome when they have completed all vaccinations including canine flu. Dogs should have basic obedience skills and not be aggressive around other dogs and people.

The course includes six sessions by AKC Certified CGC Evaluators, Carol Harris and Cora Ciaffone. The first five sessions provide skills training to prepare you and your dog for the evaluation. Individual evaluations are done in the last session. When you and your dog have passed the test you can request a certificate and title from the AKC.

The AKC states that CGC is the first step toward Therapy Dog certification. Many CGC skills are needed for Therapy Dog and Service Dog.

The 10 test items for CGC:

Accepting a friendly stranger
Sitting politely for petting
Appearance and grooming
Walking on a loose leash
Walking through a crowd
